Calcutta HC breather for 4 Rohingya women

KOLKATA: The Calcutta high court on Thursday asked the Centre not to deport four women Rohingya refugees back to Myanmar till it heard their pleas on August 10. The four women, now detained at Dum Dum Correctional Home after completion of their sentence in 2019, had moved court back in January 31, stating that they fear for their life if deported back to Myanmar and want to stay in India as refugees and be reunited with their minor children now housed in various children's homes in Bengal.

The four women on Thursday moved an urgent plea before Justice Moushumi Bhattacharya saying they had been told by jail authorities that they will be deported back to Myanmar on August 5. The four women prayed for HC to hear their pleas first before being deported. Justice Bhattacharya then asked the Centre and the state on this. Both the consuls told the court that they had no information on the specific issue. The HC then ordered that the four will not be deported till the HC hears their plea.

The women and their 13 kids were arrested in 2016 while trying to infiltrate from Bangladesh. They were sentenced to prison by a trial court the same year.
