The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday directed the Chief Electoral Officer, West Bengal, to persevere all documents and devices related to Nandigram Assembly polls.
The Court was hearing an election petition filed by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee challenging the Nandigram election results. The matter is being heard by Justice Shampa Sarkar, after Justice Kaushik Chanda recused himself from the case.
“Pending the decision of this case, all documents, election papers, devices and video recordings etc. connected with the election, which is under challenge before this Court, shall be preserved by the concerned authority who is the custodian of the papers and documents mentioned herein above,” the order said. The Court also directed that a copy of this order be served on the Chief Electoral Officer, West Bengal. The matter will come up for hearing on August 12.
Meanwhile, leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari has filed a petition before Supreme Court urging that that the case be shifted to another State. Mr Adhikari, who won against Ms. Banerjee from Nandigram by a narrow margin of 1956 votes, said in the petition that there was pressure on the judiciary in this State.
In another development, Ms.Banerjee met Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar at the Raj Bhawan during the day. The meeting lasted almost an hour.
