Calcutta HC adjourns hearing of Mamata's plea challenging her defeat in Nandigram seat

Calcutta HC and Mamata Banerjee

Kolkata: Calcutta High Court on Friday adjourned hearing of the plea filed by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee challenging her defeat in the Nandigram seat to BJP candidate Suvendu Adhikari.

Justice Kausik Chandra adjourned the hearing of the case till June 24, Thursday, immediately after admitting it in the morning today.

Banerjee filed the petition before the high court alleging malpractices in the counting of votes for the Nandigram Assembly seat in which her protégé-turned- adversary Suvendu Adhikari defeated her by 1,965 votes.

The petition claimed that the Election Commission official, in charge of counting for Nandigram, had initially declared Banerjee as winner on May 2, but the result was reversed in Adhikari’s favour a hew hours in the same day. Trinamool Congress had demanded a recount of votes but the appeal had been turned down by the returning officer.

“Accepting the verdict of the people of Nandigram, I salute the people there. It’s another thing that votes were looted there. We may move court,” she told the media on May 2.(UNI)
