Calais Campbell taking things ‘one year at a time’

The Baltimore Ravens will be relying on big things from veteran defensive lineman Calais Campbell. The former University of Miami Hurricane is a big part of what the team does on defense, and entering his second year with Baltimore, he’ll hopefully make high level impacts both on and off the field.

When Campbell was asked about the idea of retirement, he said that he’s been taking things “one year at a time”.

“Yes, that’s something that I’m still figuring out, I guess. I kind of take it one year at a time, and I know that I’ve got this year in me, for sure. I’m going to give everything I have this year, and then we’ll re-evaluate once the season ends. But it’s definitely something you think about. ‘When?’ And I used to always say when I was younger that I wanted to play 15 [years]. I didn’t realize how hard 15 was going to be; I think I was a little young. But this is 14 for me, and I know I’ve got this in me, for sure. But I still would like to play 15, so hopefully I’ve got another one. So, we’ll see.”

Campbell will turn 35 years old on September 1st, and has had a long and decorated career at the NFL level that includes 92 career sacks. Entering his 14th year, the veteran did note in his answer that he’d like to play 15 years in the league, so if he’s pleased with how he’s able to play in 2021, he could decide to make 2022 his last season so he can achieve that goal.

Campbell will be an unrestricted free agent during the 2022 offseason. It’s certainly possible that if he decides to play next year, he could re-sign with the Ravens and end his career in Baltimore like many veterans before him have chosen to do.
