Why UC Davis Will Win
This is a strong UC Davis team coming off a ten-win season – beating San Jose State and losing to Stanford – with a high-powered passing game that should be a great early test for the Cal defense.
QB Jake Maier is back after bombing away for close to 4,000 yards with 34 touchdowns. He losses Hard Knocks star Keelan Doss from the receiving corps, but Jared Harrell has the talent to be a No. 1 target, and Wes Preece is a solid veteran tight end.
The Cal offense is still a question mark after a rocky 2018 season. Put the pressure on early, and there’s going to be a problem for the Bears to keep up the pace. But …
Why Cal Will Win
Getting the offense going against this Cal defense is going to be a problem.
The secondary returns just about everyone of note from the nation’s ninth-best pass defense that picked off 21 passes and was a rock against anything happening deep.
In all, eight starts and almost all of the team’s top ten tacklers return. This is a great UC Davis offense, but it doesn’t care about controlling the clock or time of possession – it scores in a hurry. Cal should be able to dominate the tempo and the time of possession battle.
What’s Going To Happen
The Cal offense will be fine. It’s not going to be an explosive fun show, but it’ll be efficient and effective enough to let the defense do the rest. The Aggies will come up with a few good scoring drives, but the Bears will be in control from the second quarter on.
