If you’re looking for the big change for the offense, that’s probably not happening with this class – at least not for right now. There O is getting a whole lot of help, but it’s a class mostly for the future.
And it’s a good one. Justin Wilcox keeps on building up the base to keep the Bears going forward, and this class turned out to be fantastic and cranking up bulk talent for a few key spots, starting with …
The linebacking corps. Wilcox signed five in last year’s class, and came up with six this time around, starting with Kuony Deng. The 6-6, 235-pound JUCO transfer has the upside to be a killer hybrid pass rusher right out of the box. The rest of the lot is by far the strongest position in the class.
The offensive line is the other main part of the puzzle. Four were signed, and they’re all solid. The percentage of hits should be high here. And the rest of the offense?
Elijah Mojarro is a great-looking tight end, but the running backs will make the biggest instant pop. DeCarlos Brooks is the speedster, but it’s JUCO transfer Deshawn Collins who should find a role in a variety of ways.
After not signing a quarterback last season, here comes Spencer Brasch to make a push. He’s a mobile 6-4 prospect who was wanted by NC State, to Minnesota, to Syracuse, to Hawaii.
Brett Johnson is going to eventually be a star. The defensive tackle from Arizona was a nice get for the program, and he’s going go grow into a deadly interior pass rusher who’ll take over games.
Wilcox figured out his class early. There wasn’t much done on National Signing Day in a relatively no-stress class. Is it good enough to make Cal ready to blow past Washington and Oregon in the North. Probably not, but it makes the program that much tougher.
