Cal McNair believed Texans were in full compliance in Nick Caserio pursuit

Houston Texans chairman and chief operating officer Cal McNair believed his club was in full compliance with the NFL’s rules when it came to pursuing New England Patriots director of player personnel Nick Caserio.

McNair released a statement Friday, and in it he explained why the Texans decided to back out of their quest to snag Caserio from the Patriots.

“When we started the process to interview Nick Caserio for our EVP/GM position, we consulted the League office on numerous occasions, followed the procedures outlined in the League’s rules and believed we were in full compliance,” the statement read. “We have now been made aware of certain terms in Nick’s contract with the Patriots. Once we were made aware of these contract terms, I advised Mr. Kraft that we would stop pursuing Nick.”

Now that the Texans are no longer pursuing Caserio, they are back to the drawing board for replacing Brian Gaine, who was fired as the team’s general manager on June 7.

Texans senior vice president of football administration Chris Olsen will remain as Houston’s interim general manager while a replacement is sought. The Texans have only interviewed former Cleveland Browns general manager Ray Farmer and former Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew to this point.
