May 25--A 40-year-old Calumet City man was ordered held on $250,000 bail Sunday after prosecutors said he lunged at police with a knife and was shot by one of the officers.
Elias Villalobos, of the 1300 block of Kenilworth Drive, was still at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn after being wounded Wednesday, according to Cook County court records and prosecutors, and he did not appear at his Sunday court hearing.
Police responded to Villalobos' block Wednesday after reports of a man with a knife in the street, Assistant State's Attorney Kevin Kocim said.
Officers saw Villalobos enter his residence and knocked on the front door, Kocim said.
A woman answered the door and said she couldn't open it and told the officers to leave, according to Kocim.
Police, who responded to the same address May 17 for a domestic incident, then went around to the back and entered the residence through an unlocked door, Kocim said.
They searched the house and found Villalobos hiding in a crawl space in an upstairs bedroom closet, Kocim said.
Villalobos came out and lunged at police with a power drill, he said.
Police unsuccessfully attempted to subdue Villalobos with a stun gun, Kocim said.
Villalobos then pulled a knife from his waistband and lunged at one of the four officers, he said.
One officer then shot Villalobos once, Kocim said.
Villalobos was in fair condition Sunday, said Kate Eller, a spokeswoman for Christ Medical Center.
Villalobos is charged with attempted first-degree murder, according to court records.
Kocim said a handgun was found in the crawl space where Villalobos had been hiding.
Judge James Brown also ordered Villalobos held on $100,000 bail in connection with the May 17 incident.
In that incident, he is charged with unlawful restraint, aggravated domestic battery and unlawful use of a weapon by a felon after he choked a woman and then pointed a gun at her, preventing her from leaving his home, according to court records.
