Caitriona Balfe teases big things for Claire in Outlander and speaks on possibility of eighth season

Things are looking pretty rosy for Outlander star Caitriona Balfe right now.

Fresh from the news that she and her husband Tony McGill have just welcomed a wee baby boy and that she's about to star in Oscar-touted film Belfast, Cait also recently won the award for Best Actress on Television at the Saturn Awards in Los Angeles for the third time.

The Irish actress is very much in the ascendancy and with season six of Outlander on the way, it seems everyone has been looking to catch up with her of late.

Speaking in an interview with the Variety’s Awards Circuit podcast the subject of Outlander was very much the topic of the day, with Cait - who plays Claire Fraser on the hit show - happy to chat about what's in store for her character in season six.

She was also asked about her thoughts on the show and whether an eighth season could be in the offing after season seven was confirmed by Starz in March.

Outlander Season Six

The trailer for the upcoming season six recently showed Claire speaking as a worried-looking Jamie stood by her side.

"It's starting," Claire says ominously, as Jamie looks on. "A storm. The War. It's almost here."

So what does this mean for her and her Highland warrior? What can we expect? Well, Caitriona had this to say: "For Claire, it’s a really cool season, actually,” she said.

“You’re gonna see Claire destabilised in a way that we’ve never really seen her before. And a lot of that has to do with the repercussions of what happened at the end of last season.”

She is of course referring to her ordeal at the hands of her kidnappers at the end of season five, something that her and Jamie will be forced to face in the coming season - alongside the approaching American Revolutionary War.

She added that though it will be a truncated season (referring to the fact it is only eight episodes) she added that it would be "chokka" - meaning there's loads going to be happening for the Fraser Ridge Clan.

Outlander Season Eight to come?

When probed about the show's future, the star was pretty confident that it will go on for a good while longer.

She said: “I think as long as the scripts remain good and we still have new things to explore, I think that that’s always good.

“If we can all be excited about the work that we’re doing, that’s to me, the gravy, so, let’s see."

Outlander Book Nine

With Outlander Book Nine, Go Tell The Bees That I Am Gone, set to be released by author Diana Gabaldon set to be released later this month (November), and the show only at the events of book six, it seems there will be plenty of material for the series to follow going forward.
