Caitriona Balfe returns to Twitter as fans celebrate seven-year anniversary of Outlander

Outlander star Caitriona Balfe returned to Twitter recently to thank fans as they celebrated the seven-year anniversary of the hit show.

The Irish actress, who had taken a short hiatus from social media, was shocked to realise it has been seven years since the airing of the first episode (Sassenach).

She wrote: "7 years!!!!! The anniversary of our first airing and what a thrilling ride it’s been since then.

"Thank you to all our fans who’ve stuck with us so faithfully year after year."

She also then thanked Diana Gabaldon for "giving us all this gift" and Starz for their continued support.

Delighted to see her back, fans were quick to respond.

One wrote: "No - thank YOU Caitriona and the rest of the #Outlander cast and crew, and Diana Gabaldon for creating such a marvelous love story and bringing it to life. I wish I could hug you all in thanks, but will settle for toasting you. Sláinte!"

While another added: "This show changed my life! Thanks, Cait for everything you've given us! Forever grateful."

Fellow star Sam Heughan went down a more humourous avenue with his pic, choosing an image of him posing with a 'dead' extra on set.

He wrote: "7 years ago today @outlander_starz premiered! These are the first photos I have on my phone (I actually lost my phone on set in the prison whilst filming the season 1 finale).

"After 7 years, looks like nothings changed, still learning my lines whilst Cait sleeps."

The cast and crew recently finished filming season six in Scotland with new showrunner Matthew B Roberts, who took over from Ronald D. Moore, stating: "We are excited to get into the editing room to work on bringing the fans one step closer to reuniting with the family back on Fraser's Ridge."

We can't wait to see what the gang get up to when Droughtlander finally ends, here is to another seven years!
