The former Olympic athlete Bruce Jenner has announced the latest stage of her transition to a female identity on the cover of Vanity Fair magazine.

Photographed by Annie Leibovitz, Jenner announces that her first name is Caitlyn.

Jenner’s transition has been the subject of intense media interest, explored in an interview with Diane Sawyer and also on the reality show Keeping Up With the Kardashians. Jenner is the ex-spouse of Kris Kardashian, mother of Kim.

In an interview with Friday Night Lights author Buzz Bissinger about her transition, Jenner tells Vanity Fair: “If I was lying on my deathbed and I had kept this secret and never ever did anything about it, I would be lying there saying, ‘You just blew your entire life.’”

A video released by the magazine shows Jenner on the shoot at her home in Malibu. She says: “I was probably at the Games because I was running away from a lot of things. I’m very, very proud of the accomplishment. I don’t want to diminish that accomplishment.

“The last few days in doing this shoot was about my life and who I am as a person. it’s not about the fanfare, it’s not about people cheering in the stadium ... this is about your life.

“Bruce always had to tell a lie. He was always living that lie. Every day, he always had a secret from morning until night. Caitlyn doesn’t have any secrets. As soon as the Vanity Fair cover comes out, I’m free.”

Caitlyn Jenner also launched a Twitter account which has been verified. Her first tweet said: “I’m so happy after such a long struggle to be living my true self. Welcome to the world Caitlyn. Can’t wait for you to get to know her/me.”
