Caitlyn Jenner backed by Arnold Schwarzenegger to follow in his political footsteps

Arnold Schwarzenegger has backed Caitlyn Jenner after she launched a bid to become governor of California.

There had been a lot of speculation that Caitlyn, an Olympic hero and reality TV star, was planning to run for the seat and she confirmed the announcement last week.

Caitlyn will take on Democrat Gavin Newsom for the seat with the 53-year-old facing a recall election following a Republican-led backlash against how he has handled the pandemic.

And now the Terminator actor has admitted he thinks that Caitlyn can follow in his footsteps from celebrity to politician.

Former bodybuilder Arnie ousted the previous governor to be recalled and replaced Gray Davis as the state's leader in 2003.

He has predicted that Caitlyn can repeat his triumph if she presents a clear vision for California's future.

However, the actor-turned-politician also predicted another 100 candidates will enter the race for California's highest office.

During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Arnie admitted that anyone has a chance because of how much dissatisfaction there is in California.

Arnie said: "The key thing about all of this is it doesn't matter if it's Caitlyn or anyone else - to have a clear vision of where you want to go, what are the kind of changes you want to make and why are you qualified to become governor.

"That's what you have to convince the people, all the other stuff is all nonsense because the press will attack you no matter who you are. They attacked me, but then in the end, I won so that was the main thing."

Arnie went on to describe how the new governor would have to ring the changes to "straighten out all the mess we're in right now".

He said several hopefuls had contacted him for advice on how to run fro the seat, but refused to confirm whether Caitlyn was one of them.

He described both Caitlyn and Gavin as good friends of his.
