Artist and photographer Caitlin Cronenberg's feature directorial debut 'Humane' has been acquired by IFC Films and Shudder for U.S. distribution. The film is set for a theatrical release on April 26, followed by a debut on Shudder later in the year. Elevation Pictures will handle Canadian distribution. Shot in Hamilton, Ontario, the film features a cast including Jay Baruchel, Emily Hampshire, and Peter Gallagher.

'Humane' is a dystopian satire set in a post-global ecological collapse world where extreme measures are taken to reduce the earth's population. The story revolves around a retired newsman who plans to enlist in the nation's new euthanasia program, leading to unexpected chaos during a family dinner.

The film has received praise for its timeliness and social critique, with industry insiders lauding Cronenberg's directorial skills. The acquisition by IFC Films and Shudder has been described as a significant milestone for the filmmaker.

Cronenberg, known for her work as a still photographer on various film and TV productions, expressed excitement about the release of her debut film. She highlighted the support and understanding of horror films by the distributors, emphasizing the genre-bending nature of 'Humane.'

Produced by Victory Man Productions and executive produced by Prospero Pictures, XYZ Films, and Elevation Pictures, 'Humane' received financing from Telefilm Canada and Ontario Creates. The film's production involved collaboration with various industry partners, including Crave and Bell Media.

In an interview, Cronenberg discussed her inspiration for 'Humane' and her affinity for the horror and thriller genres. She also shared insights into her family's influence on her filmmaking journey, having worked with her father and brother, both established directors.

Looking ahead, Cronenberg expressed eagerness to continue directing, citing a positive experience with her debut film. She emphasized the balance between photography and filmmaking in her creative pursuits, indicating a readiness to take on new projects in the future.
