Caitlin Clark Becomes Highest Scoring Player in Major Women’s College Basketball History

Editors’ note, Feb. 29, 8:30 a.m. ET: This story has been updated to reflect that Caitlin Clark became the leading career scorer in major women’s college basketball history.

Iowa superstar Caitlin Clark scored the 3,650th point in her collegiate career Wednesday night at Minnesota, becoming the leading scorer in major women’s college basketball history.

This milestone pushed her past Kansas great Lynette Woodard’s mark of 3,649 points. Woodard’s record was set before the NCAA sanctioned women’s sports.

Clark now boasts the major women’s college basketball scoring record, along with the NCAA women’s basketball record, the Big Ten women’s basketball record and Iowa’s program record. That’s quite the résumé for the senior guard, who also leads the nation in scoring with 32.2 points per game this season.

Clark had a monster night Wednesday in the Hawkeyes’ 108–60 romp over the Golden Gophers, starting out strong by scoring Iowa’s first 15 points. From there she continued to dominate, finishing with 33 points. She secured a second consecutive triple-double, as she also tacked on 12 assists and 10 rebounds.

The 22-year-old also broke the record for the most three-pointers in Big Ten’s women’s basketball history.

Although Clark now holds the major college scoring record, it should be noted that Pearl Moore scored 3,884 points at South Carolina’s Francis Marion College (now Francis Marion University) under legendary coach Sylvia Hatchell in the 1970s.
