Two prominent members of the Sudan talks in Cairo confirmed that they were proceeding in a healthy atmosphere, with a common strategic goal, within the framework of Egypt’s efforts to resolve controversial issues among the Sudanese parties.
Leaders of the Forces for Freedom and Change and the Revolutionary Front continued their meetings in the Egyptian capital in an attempt to narrow the gap between the different political visions.
In a statement to Asharq Al-Awsat, Yasser Arman, a senior member of the Revolutionary Front, said that for the first time all issues of peace and democratization were discussed directly for the sake of developing the political process.
He stressed that Egypt was contributing to overcoming the remaining obstacles, adding that Cairo’s initiative complemented the African mediation and the meetings in Addis Ababa and Juba.
In turn, Dr. Omar al-Dukair, a prominent member of the Forces for Freedom and Change, told Asharq Al-Awsat that the transitional phase in Sudan was necessary to strengthen the state’s national identity, end conflicts and build a solid democracy and balanced external relations.
He also underlined the importance of the Cairo meetings, ruling out the presence of disputes and noting that the peace agreement would be included within the constitutional document.
The Transitional Military Council and the forces of the Declaration of Freedom and Change agreed earlier this month on a constitutional declaration to govern the transitional period following months of political instability.
The armed movements - operating under the Revolutionary Front – expressed reservations over the document signed with the TMC, noting that it failed to include the “peace paper” that was approved in Addis Ababa. Current meetings in Cairo are aimed at resolving this matter.
