Cairo fire: At least 25 dead after blaze breaks out following fuel tank explosion at train station

At least 20 people have been killed after a fire broke out at a train station in Cairo.

The fire is said to have been triggered by an explosion of a fuel tank on a speeding train that was heading into the Ramsis station in downtown Cairo.

More than 40 people are said to be injured.

Mina Ghaly saw the explosion: "I was standing on the platform and I saw the train speed into the barrier.

"Everyone started running but a lot of people died after the locomotive exploded."

Mohammed Said, head of the Cairo Railroad hospital said the death toll is expected to rise.

Heavy black smoke can be seen rising into the sky at the scene.

Images from the station show emergency services attending.

The Ramsis district is among the busiest and most crowded areas of the Egyptian capital.

The state railway agency briefly halted all train traffic and ordered the evacuation of the station.

Egypt's Prime Minister Mustafa Madbouli said authorities must determine "who caused the accident and hold that person accountable." He promised "harsh punishment" for the culprits.

The country's general prosecutor has ordered an investigation into the fire.

According to the BBC, Egypt's railway network has a poor safety record.

In 2002, more than 370 people were killed when a fire ripped through an overcrowded passenger train.
