Cairo Cooperates with World Bank to Prepare for COP27

Egyptian ministers held talks with World Bank officials on Wednesday to discuss cooperation mechanisms between the two sides as Cairo prepares for the COP27 Climate Summit, which will be held in Sharm el-Sheikh in late 2022.

In this regard, Minister of Environment Dr. Yasmin Fouad met with World Bank Managing Director of Development Policy and Partnerships Mari Pangestu and her accompanying delegation.

The meeting tackled key initiatives and topics that will be presented at the upcoming event, as well as the latest developments in the preparation for the Country Climate and Development Report the World Bank is preparing in several countries, including Egypt.

Fouad hailed the World Bank's support for Egypt’s environment sector and efforts to integrate the environmental dimension into the development process.

She further welcomed cooperation to support Egypt’s hosting of the climate summit, which seeks to implement the steps needed to accelerate climate action, present success stories from different regions for projects and programs to address the impacts of climate change.

According to Fouad, the event presents actual experiences to stimulate participation in combating the effects of climate change.

“Topics such as financing, dimensions of adaptation, priorities of developing countries, updated national contributions of countries, the required goals and actual experiences are put together to provide an integrated picture of how to start the implementation process.”

Pangestu, for her part, hailed Cairo’s efforts to integrate environment and climate change dimension into the development process, as well as the various initiatives it has launched in the fields of environment and climate change.

She also met with the Minister of Planning and Economic Development, Hala al-Saeed. Both sides discussed the features of Egypt’s Vision 2030 and the current modernization process to keep pace with global developments.

Saeed said the ministry is keen to integrate the environmental dimensions, sustainability and climate change into the various relevant national plans and strategies.

Adapting to climate changes has become a top priority for Egypt, the minister affirmed.

She cited the policies aimed at supporting the transition to a green economy, maintaining the sustainable use of natural resources as the focus of the country’s structural reforms program.
