Cairn overlooking Faslane renamed in memory of former Vale of Leven Academy teacher and Royal Marine

A cairn at the top of Beinn a’Mhanaich in the Luss Hills has been renamed in honour of a tragic former Vale of Leven Academy teacher.

Former Royal Marine Chris Moses, 37, passed away last year while carrying out work as a tree surgeon in Rhu.

The professional tree surgeon, from Cardross, was embarking on a new career as a maths teacher at the Vale of Leven Academy following 13 years as a Royal Marine, where he did tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Chris was described by VOLA headteacher Matthew Boyle as “bright, cheerful, and passionate.”

In March former Marine colleagues of Chris took part in a gruelling mountain marathon to raise more than £8000 for causes close to his heart - The Royal Marines Charity and Erskine.

At the time the Royal Marines submitted a request to the Ordnance Survey for the Cairn at the top of the mountain to be re-named Moses Cairn in memory of Chris.

The OS have now confirmed that this will go ahead and will be included in the October release of Master Map.

It will be visible from April 2022 in OS Mapping.

Major Kane Holford and Warrant Officer 2 Richard Hayden together came up with the idea of mounting the memorial plaque on the mountain overlooking Faslane.

WO2 Hayden said: “I am pleased to have been part of this meaningful event to remember Chris.

“As well as raising some money for charities that were important to Chris, we have made sure his name will live on at the top of Beinn a’Mhanaich, a place close to where he lived and worked”

Earlier this year pupils and staff at the Vale Academy also pulled on their running shoes in memory of Chris, as they took part in the Chris Moses 5k to raise funds for youth charity Y Sort It and RSPB Loch Lomond.
