Cairn Homes gets go-ahead to plodge plans for 614 homes at former RTE site

The planning board has given the green light for Cairn Homes to lodge plans to build 614 homes to be built on land in Donnybrook formerly owned by RTE.

The developer bought the land at Montrose from the State broadcaster for €107.5m in 2017 and now plans to build 611 apartments, three townhouse, two cafes and a childcare facility at the site.

Cairn can now lodge a formal planning application to An Bord Pleanala under the Government’s fast track planning scheme, with a decision expected within 16 weeks.

The housebuilder’s pre-planning consultation with APB involved planners from Dublin City Council, and the appeals board made their ruling after nine weeks scrutinising Cairn’s application.

The board’s positive assessment of the application is expected to ensure its smooth passage.

The number of apartments Cairn hopes to build is higher than the 500 it initially suggested it would construct on the 3.49-hectare site at the RTE campus after its purchase two years ago.

The prime of €75 million.

Cairn's plans will be lodged under Strategic Housing Development rules - meaning developers' applications bypass local councils and go straight to ABP's appeals board for approval.

The SHD fast-tracked planning process can save a year or more in the time needed to have large-scale proposals decided.
