Cafe went from one star to five star rating and customers now say it does 'the best breakfasts'

A takeaway and delivery fast food business has turned things around after being taken over by new owners.

In June 2019, hygiene officers found a catalogue of problems at Rio’s Cafe in Bootle – including stacks of out of date raw beef burgers, and “no soap” at the hand-wash basin.

The Marsh Lane cafe was hit with a one-star hygiene rating, though staff at the time said it was due to “certain paperwork” not being on the premises on the day of the inspection.

But now under new management, and renamed MJ’s, the cafe has been given the highest possible food hygiene rating by Sefton Council.

Manager Mark McLaughlin says he is proud of what staff have achieved.

Mark said: “We took the business over at the beginning of [2020] and we’ve been busy. We put in a new kitchen and did a thorough deep-clean.

“We got [the place] back how it needs to be.

“We finally opened about six months later, in August, and it’s been insane. The reviews we are getting, people are loving what we are doing.”

MJ’s is listed on the Just Eat website, and has accumulated an impressive 5.5 out of 6 stars rating.

Reviewers say the breakfasts are “the best”, and “delicious”.

Mark continued: “During the second lockdown we also started doing meal prep for people and it’s really taken off.”

Sefton Council’s hygiene inspectors gave MJ’s a five star hygiene review.

This means its cleanliness standards are “very good”.
