Cafe Revival - Bristol's oldest coffee house - reopens with a new look

A historic building in Bristol city centre which has stood as a café for more than 200 years has a new look.

Cafe Revival in Corn Street, the city's oldest coffee house, showed off its new design when it reopened at the end of August.

The renovation work at the three-floor venue took place throughout June and July, leaving it with an aesthetic which has gone down well, said owner Amit Kriplani.

"It's been a long time since this building has had a freshen up," said the 35-year-old.

"We've moved the kitchen on the ground floor which means we now cook in front of guests and have a nice open feel.

"We've also given the café a fresh lick of grey and white paint throughout to leave it with an industrial look, and have also increased our seating area outside.

"Now that we're up and running again staff are enjoying the new layout of the café and our customers have given us some nice feedback about the look."

Amit, who took over the café in November 2018, said some of the walls will be covered in murals by a local artist to highlight the fact Cafe Revival is Bristol's longest-running coffee house.

Certain features such as the wooden panelling on the ceiling have been left in place in a nod to the history of the building, where Georgian merchants used to meet to make deals and share trading gossip.

There are some new additions to the menu too, including Wall's ice cream and quesadillas, and the café is running an offer which allows customers to purchase a tea or coffee for just £1 with any item between Monday and Friday.

Amit said the refurbishment was not the only reason he wanted to delay reopening until late August, long after many other cafés reopened.

"Not only were we busy working on the refurbishment but we also wanted to keep an eye on the number of coronavirus cases in Bristol and wait until we were assured we could open as safely as possible," he added.

"We sent all our staff to be tested for coronavirus before we reopened and we take their temperatures before they start their shift each day.

"Initially our staff were not confident about returning to work but they're much happier now."

For much of the 20th century 56 Corn Street was known as Carwardines, a coffee shop which roasted its own coffee on site, before it ceased trading in 1996.

In 2002 it was taken on by a new owner who 'revived' the building with a refurbishment, and named it Cafe Revival as a result.

Revival Cafe is located at 56 Corn Street, Bristol, BS1 1JG. For more information, visit its website.
