Cafe opens in Nottingham where it's not just food on sale - but the furniture too

Ever gone into a cafe and fallen in love with the teapot or a lamp? If that happens at Nottingham's newest coffee shop, you can buy it - and that applies to the sofas and tables too.

Customers can enjoy drinks and home-made cake at Cobden Place Cafe, which has been kitted out with retro furniture and homewares from Hopkinson's, Nottingham's vintage emporium.

The homely, laid back stop-off has taken over where Dash Vegan's Garden Cafe used to operate at the very end of Cobden Chambers, an alleyway of hidden gems off Pelham Street.

Delicious seasonal cakes are made by Sam Rose of Betty Rose Bakes. Her ingredients are from foraging expeditions or gifts from allotments holders and local gardeners, who are rewarded in return with cake.

"This week we have got pears, apples and plums. Soon I'll be using lots of pumpkins, parsnips, butternut squash and beetroot in my bakes," said Sam, who set up her baking company after being made redundant by Nottingham College.

Plum and almond crumble and pear and ginger slices are currently on the menu, together with lemon, rose and cardamom cake, chocolate orange with pistachio crumb and chocolate brownies - and whatever the selection there will also be something vegan and gluten-free.

Their own blend of filter coffee from local roaster Lee and Fletcher and loose leaf tea cost £2.50 - with unlimited refills. If you like the cups, saucers, teapots and trays, they're for sale.

So are the lamps, the magazine racks, chairs, tables and plump sofas. The only items not for sale are the Tretchikoff prints, amongst them the popular Chinese Girl.

Liam Woodgates, who took over the building five years ago, said: "They are just so scarce. I used to be able to buy them on a regular basis but now when they become available they are quite expensive."

The cafe sprung up in just three days. After Dash Vegan's closed to focus on its zero waste shop upstairs, Liam set about decorating and building a new counter out of wooden palletts.

The cafe is open to the general public and co-workers at THiNK, within Cobden Place, can benefit from members rates on the food and drink.

"We are trying to create a warm, welcoming and comfortable environment. If you fall in love with something, everything is for sale," said Liam.

"We want it to be a relaxed place to come and sit and work, as well. It's a hidden gem."

A food menu is in development and ideas so far include a self-service system with Kilner jars of noodle soup and salads.

Cobden Place Cafe is open seven days a week, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm, and weekends, from 11am to 5pm.
