Cafe Grounded Thornbury branch near Bristol closes down

An independent coffee shop group has closed one of its cafe-bars in the Bristol area.

Grounded has shut its branch in Thornbury after the lease on the building ended.

The group has cafes in Bedminster, Brislington, Fishponds, Horfield, Keynsham and Redfield in the city.

It also has branches in Chippenham and Corsham in Wiltshire.

A spokesperson for the group said the business had simply “decided not to renew the lease” and no other cafes are closing.

Grounded Redfield was the first of the group to open in January 2008.

Property developer Tobie Holbrook founded the chain after deciding he wanted to recreate the “welcoming, inviting atmosphere of a living room" in a cafe.

Grounded serves tapas-style dishes, pizza, salad and burgers, as well as cocktails.

The chain also runs weekly open mic nights every Wednesday in one of the Bristol branches, offering a chance for musicians, poets and performers to showcase their work.

The evenings are hosted by Bristol-based singer-songwriter and drummer Harry Harding who is passionate about supporting local musical talent.

Bristol has seen a number of eateries close in 2019.

Pizza Express on Corn Street and Mesa Tapas and Bar in Henleaze closed in May, while Kingsdown Fried Fish in Kingdown Parade and Thali in Totterdown shut in March.
