Caerphilly council leader Philippa Marsden loses her seat

Caerphilly County Borough Council is set to have a new leader after current leader Philippa Marsden is defeated. The Labour councillor won just 213 votes this year compared to 720 at the last election in 2017.

The two independent candidates now elected into her former Ynysddu ward each have more than 1100 votes each. Jan Jones won 1162, while Janine Reed won 1150.

No Plaid Cymru candidates stood to represent the ward this year. Instead it was a race between mother and daughter Philippa and Phoebe Marsden for labour and the two winning independents. Phoebe Marsden won 183 seats.

The former leader has declined to comment at this stage following the result. You can get more local election coverage by visiting our live blog.
