Caerphilly council flat forced to close because of 'anti-social behaviour and criminal activity'

A Caerphilly council property has been forced to shut because it has plagued local residents with "persistent anti-social behaviour and criminal activity".

A closure order has been granted by the courts on a Caerphilly County Borough Council flat at Dan Y Graig in Pontlottyn.

Officers from the council’s tenancy enforcement section worked in partnership with Gwent Police and local residents to apply for the order.

A three-month closure order was granted at Newport Magistrates Court on Thursday July 15 2021 and will remain in force until October 14 2021. It means the flat is not accessible to anyone during this time including the tenant, who is being supported by the council.

Councillor Lisa Phipps, the council’s cabinet member for housing, said “The closure order will come as welcome news to many local residents who had been the victims of continual anti-social behaviour and nuisance arising from this property. Evidence from residents is key in helping us tackle cases such as this and I’d like to thank those who came forward and worked with our Officers to help reach this resolution.”

The tenancy enforcement section deals with incidents of anti-social behaviour or nuisance either experienced by council tenants or as a result of someone living in a council property.
