Caernarfon and Bangor businesses give BID groups five more years in ballot

Firms in Bangor and Caernarfon have voted to continue Business Improvement Districts in the town centres for another five years.

BID groups - which use money from a levy on businesses to help with regeneration and promotional work - face a renewal vote every five years.

In Bangor, 58% of those who voted supported an extension while in Caernarfon it was 65% on a turnout of 38%.

Pamela Poynton, chair of Bangor First, said: "We would like to thank Bangor businesses for their continuing support, especially under the challenging circumstances of the past year.

"We believe there is much more work to be done to bring our vibrant and unique city to its full potential, and that this aim will be best achieved in collaboration, with city stakeholders and businesses working together in partnership with the community."

Mayor of Bangor Cllr John Wyn Williams said: "This means an investment of over £740,000 in Bangor over the next five years.

"Bangor City Council will be working closely with Bangor First and other partners to ensure that the next BID term benefits Bangor businesses and residents, and that the BID helps the development of the city as a good place to live, work and invest in.”

On the Caernarfon vote, Gwynedd Council Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Community, Councillor Gareth Thomas said: “I’m pleased that business in Caernarfon were able to use their ballots under such difficult circumstances.

"Our town centres are currently facing huge challenges, and we hope that the positive result for Hwb Caernarfon will provide additional opportunities to promote and bring investment to the town.

"We look forward to working closely with Hwb Caernarfon over the next 5 years”.
