Caedmon Primary School in Gateshead sends two year groups home to isolate after confirmed Covid case

Two year groups at a primary school have been asked to isolate after a case of Covid-19 was confirmed at the site.

Children in Reception and Year 1 at Caedmon Primary School, in Gateshead, are now self-isolating for 14 days as they have been identified as close contacts of the positive case.

No other year groups are affected at this time and pupils in remaining classes are asked to attend school as normal.

The school says it is following public health advice and has carried out a full risk assessment, identifying all those who had been in close contact with the affected person.

On Thursday, letters were sent to families informing them of the positive Covid-19 result.

Parents of Reception and Year 1 children received a note saying: "We have been advised that there has been a confirmed case of Covid-19 within the school.

"We have identified that your child has been in close contact with the affected case. In line with the national guidance we recommend that your child now stays at home and self-isolates until Tuesday 13th October 2020.

"Your child must not go to school or any public areas: your child must remain at home."

The letter added: "We are asking you to do this to reduce the further spread of Covid-19 to others in the community. If you need support with isolation, please contact your local council.

"Other members of your household can continue normal activities provided your child does not develop symptoms within the self-isolation period. If your child is well at the end of the period of self-isolation, then they can return to usual activities."

Caedmon Primary is the latest in a growing number of schools that have been affected by coronavirus. Positive cases have been confirmed at primaries, secondary schools and colleges across the North East.

Some schools have been forced to close fully or partially, while others have remained open but asked affected year groups or bubbles to isolate.
