Cadent issue message to Liverpool FC fans after gas leak found near The Kop

Cadent has issued a message to Liverpool fans heading to Anfield after they received a number of calls about the smell of gas near The Kop.

The gas emergency service received reports of gas being smelt around Walton Breck Road, next to Liverpool Football Club's Anfield stadium. Once workmen arrived and investigated, they found a gas leak under the road next to The Kop end.

Cadent have assured people the leak is "under control and safe", and have issued an update on how long they will be at the scene, with Liverpool playing Southampton at Anfield on Saturday.

A spokesperson for Merseyside’s gas emergency service Cadent said: "After we received a report of a smell of gas, our team investigated and found a leak on a pipe under Walton Breck Road. Everything is under control and a safe work area has been created that enables the road to stay open (as you can see from the photo).

"Liverpool play Southampton tomorrow and it’s likely our work will not be complete by then, due to the nature of the repair needed. We just want residents and fans to be reassured, and also for them to know that the road stays open to enter and exit the ground.

"Just be a little careful, as the road will be narrower. This area is always incredibly busy before and after the match. Huge praise too to the person who reported in this smell of gas.

"It’s very important to call the national gas emergency service on 0800 111 999*, immediately, day or night, if you ever smell gas, suspect carbon monoxide or see damage to gas pipes.

Pictures from the scene show a small area of the road behind a metal cage with a Cadent van also at the scene.
