Cadbury to shrink chocolate bars in bid to tackle obesity

Cadbury will shrink some of its childhood favourites in a bid to tackle obesity among young people.

The firm announced a number of its most popular chocolate bars will reduce in size in order for them to be below 100 calories, reports Chronicle Live.

Bars of Fudge, Curly Wurly and Chomp will be getting a chop in size “over the next few months”, according to bosses at the firm.

Currently a Fudge contains 114 calories, a Curly Wurly has 118 and a Chomp contains 110.

And they are not the only ones to see a reduction in size - Mini Fingers, Animals, Freddo, and Buttons were also slashed to bring it under that 100- calorie threshold.

In an interview with trade magazine the Grocer, Louise Stigant, of Mondelez International, said it was “the right approach in terms of helping parents control calories when wanting to treat their children."

She added: “We feel strongly about playing our part in tackling childhood obesity.”

The latest brands to fall under 100 calories will get a new pack design that includes “a striking flash” to highlight the claim.

A recent study revealed that a third of Scots children are considered to be ‘overweight’.

The Scottish Health Survey, released in September last year, had shown that 30 per cent are now in the ‘overweight’ bracket - with 16 per cent at risk of obesity.
