Cadbury set to shrink childhood favourites in a bid to help tackle obesity

Popular favourites are set for a calorie cut by Cadbury within months in a move designed to help tackle childhood obesity.

The pocket money treats Fudge, Curly Wurly and Chomp will be reduced to below 100 calories “over the next few months”, says Cadbury owner Mondelez.

At present there are 114 cals in a Fudge, 118 in a Curly Wurly and 110 in a Chomp and the cut is expected to come with sizes slashed.

Cadbury Mini Fingers and Cadbury Animals were brought under the threshold last year.

By the end of this year, Mondelez will have 11 brands that meet the limit including Freddo, Buttons and Mini Fingers.

I n an interview with trade magazine the Grocer, Louise Stigant, of Mondelez International, said it was “the right approach in terms of helping parents control calories when wanting to treat their children”.

She added: “We feel strongly about playing our part in tackling childhood obesity.”

The latest brands to fall under 100 calories will get a new pack design that includes “a striking flash” to highlight the claim.

In the North East one in 20 children were obese by Year 6, as of 2018.

In the North East, severe obesity among Year 6 children is at 4.92%.

The figure in County Durham is 5.16%, Gateshead is 6.03%, Newcastle 5.48%, North Tyneside 4.79%, Northumberland 4.10%, South Tyneside 4.56% and Sunderland is 4.83%.

This is compared to the reception year figures, which are much lower at 2.83% for the North East region as a whole.

The councils individually are County Durham 2.41%, Gateshead 3.35%, Newcastle 3.40%, North Tyneside 2.38%, Northumberland 2.89%, South Tyneside 2.54% and Sunderland 2.80%.
