Cadbury's 1950s-style chocolate bar goes on sale at Beamish Museum evoking sweet memories

A 1950-style bar of chocolate is proving the latest temptation for visitors to Beamish Museum as it helps to make nostalgic childhood memories even sweeter.

For those of a certain age the sight of a bar of Cadbury's Dairy Milk in its traditional packaging will strike a chord and this new addition is now on sale at the County Durham museum where it is certainly set to get people takling.

The chocolate bar features the original 1951 design on its paper wrap packaging - though the chocolate is in plastic rather than foil beneath. The bars are now on sale at the entrance shop of the museum which, says Beamish, is "probably the only place in the country - if not the world" where it is available.

The special edition Cadbury's Dairy Milk, featuring that familiar purple colour wrapper, comes with a choice of personalised lettering so that buyers can also, for instance, pick out an individual's name or birthday greeting.

The style of the bar, which ties in with the 1950s developments which are ongoing at the museum, will no doubt evoke some fond memories for lots of visitors who bought it in the era.

Beamish of the Future

As part of the ambitious Remaking Beamish project, a 1950s Town is now taking shape on the site and its first building - a replica of a 1957 Welfare Hall and Community Centre from Leasingthorne Colliery -  was unveiled last summer.

Other developments to come include rebuilds of Norman Cornish's Spennymoor house; Doreen's fish and chip shop from Middleton St George; John's cafe from Wingate and a Middlesbrough hair salon.

A focal point of the 1950s Town is to be The Grand Electric Cinema, a big project in itself requiring the rebuilding - brick by brick - of an original 500-seat cinema from Ryhope, Sunderland.

Once complete, the intention is for the cinema to show short films and newsreel during the day-time with the possibility of features to run during the evenings.
