Cadbury Club fire: Smoke and huge flames billow over Birmingham

A huge fire has broken out at the famous Cadbury Club in Birmingham.

The social club caught ablaze this afternoon, casting smoke across the city.

It appears that the fire broke out at around 5pm this afternoon.

The Cadbury Club was set up more than 35 years ago for employees of the chocolate company.

It serves both as a bar and a reception room for weddings, birthdays and christenings.

The club is situated in the Bourneville area of the south of the city.

Footage taken from the scene shows a large emergency service presence.

Witnesses reported seeing smoke from the fire from several miles away.

Residents living in buildings close to the blaze have been evacuated from their homes.

The West Midlands Fire Service tweeted that seven crews were in attendance.

More than 50 fire fighters were brought in to tackle the blaze, helped by a hydraulic platform.

It is not known if anyone was injured in the blaze (@BrumBabyBank)

They added: "Four main jets are in use. Please avoid Bournville Lane, Mary Vale Round and the surrounding area."

Several roads close to the fire have been closed.

It is not known if there have been any injuries caused by the fire.

People took to social media to lament the club's destruction.

One man wrote: "Devastating news about the big fire The Cadbury Club. 400/250 capacity venue, excellent asset to the factory community and beyond.

"On a personal level it also hits hard as me and my wife had our wedding reception there. Hope it can be saved."
