Cadaver dog to search for mother who vanished a year ago on camping trip with estranged husband

The family of Ruth Ridley, from Port Macquarie, is extremely worried about her.

A specialised cadaver dog will be used in the search for missing mother-of-three Ruth Ridley, who police fear was killed in a domestic violence incident a year ago.

Ms Ridley, 58, of Port Macquarie, vanished in October last year after she travelled from her home to Tumbarumba in southern New South Wales.

The last confirmed sighting of Ms Ridley was at a supermarket in Albury on October 24 last year.

She is believed to have then travelled across the border to Victoria to go camping with her estranged husband Gary, at Neil’s Reserve in Walwa on the weekend of October 26 and 27.

Ms Ridley was reported missing four days later on October 30 by a family member, who held grave concerns for her welfare.

Wodonga Family Violence Unit Detective Leading Senior Constable Andrew Leonard said it was understood there were up to four additional campsites at Neil's Reserve at the time Ms Ridley was believed to have been there.

He is appealing for those who were camping at the site on that weekend to come forward.

"To date we have only spoken to one of those campers and would really like to hear from the others that were in the area at the time," he said.

Police confirmed in November last year that Ms Ridley’s car, a dark blue Mitsubishi Pajero, was found more than 40 kilometres from the campsite, in the Victorian town of Shelley — with the body of her estranged husband inside.

His death was not treated as suspicious.

Despite extensive searches by both Victoria and New South Wales police around the Corryong and Walwa areas, there has been no sign of Ms Ridley.

"It’s been 12 months since Ruth’s disappearance," Senior Constable Leonard said.

"Even the slightest detail could be of significant assistance to help us ascertain what has occurred."

Areas surrounding the camping location will be searched by a cadaver dog from the NSW police dog unit this morning.

The investigation remains ongoing as Victoria Police prepares a report for the Coroner.
