Cactus leather and pineapple-leaf wool: the eco fabrics we could soon be wearing

The clothing contains "friendly" bacteria to stop sweating

Eco fabrics of the future that use plants and natural waste instead of artificial fibres are being showcased at a London expo today.

Cactus leather, wool made of pineapple leaves sourced from leftovers at juice bars and innovative sportswear embedded with live bacteria to neutralise body odour all feature.

The sportswear has been designed by Rosie Broadhead who has injected probiotics that react with skin into garments for her Skin II range. Millions of “good” bacteria are encased in panels in key areas such as armpits and groin, and are “activated” when the wearer sweats.

They neutralise the smell of pungent “bad” bacteria, acting as a natural deodorant. The product has been made in collaboration with a Belgian microbiologist Dr Christopher Callewaert — known as “Dr Armpit” for his studies of sweating.

Ms Broadhead, 27, will showcase her latest Skin II concepts, which include underwear and bodysuits, left, at the Future Fabrics Expo in Bloomsbury.
