Cabra woman celebrates 102nd birthday as daughter hails community that helped her through lockdown

A Cabra woman celebrated her 102nd birthday last weekend as her daughter hailed the community that helped her through lockdown.

Elizabeth 'Ettie' Gorman was visited by neighbours, friends, and community police who were eager to celebrate her momentous occasion.

Ettie was originally from Smithfield and lived in the Lighthouse Cinema when it was still tenements.

She moved to Cabra after her mam died and went onto see over a century of changes in Dublin and around the world.

The former seamstress married her husband Paddy and had three children together in the north Dublin town.

Her youngest daughter Catherine spoke to Dublin Live about the unbelievable milestone during uncertain times.

She said: "We had a lovely day for her 100th because it was pre-Covid so I kind of had an open house for people throughout the day.

"Where has this year and last year it was just the windows. It's great that she's still at home. She could see people around and there were a few toddlers around- she loves seeing the kids.

The family found the community policing unit extremely helpful during lockdown.

Catherine said: "It's the local station to use and at the start of last year with lockdown they had called and they were asking if any older neighbours were living on their own."

Ettie has no great secrets on living a healthy and long life but was never a smoker.

Her daughter said: "She never smoked. She tried a smoke at one stage and she never really liked it.

"The other women would have said 'it helps you relax Ettie' and she didn't really like it at all."

People from all over the world were delighted to wish the much-loved Dublin woman a happy birthday.

One person commented: "Congratulations Elizabeth! Have a wonderful birthday."

Another wrote: "Happy Birthday Elizabeth from the US!!"

A third person posted: "Go Elizabeth!!"
