Cabra home to the capital's least energy efficient houses

Sandyford is home to the city’s most energy efficient houses while almost half of properties in Cabra are not making the grade, Dublin Live can reveal.

Our latest data investigation of new Central Statistics Office figures probes the ratings of 198,325 BER certificates issued to homes around the county between 2009 and 2020.

Our analysis shows that 43% of homes in the Dublin 18 suburb are ‘A’ rated - the highest in the capital.

Clongriffin and Belmayne in Dublin 13 follow at 36%, with Blanchardstown (D15) in third place at 30%.

Chapelizod and Palmerstown in Dublin 20 along with Ballymun and Finglas (D11) come next at 27%, while one-in-four homes (25%) in the south city centre (D2) are ‘A’ rated.

At the other end of the scale, older homes in several sought-after areas of Dublin may be high in price, but they’re low in energy efficiency.

With heating costs averaging €4,000 in ‘G’ rated dwellings compared with just €190 a year in ‘A’ rated properties, households are paying thousands more in energy costs as well as property and rent prices to live in certain parts of the city.

Cabra in Dublin 7 has Dublin’s highest proportion of E or lower rated homes at 44%.

Ranelagh and Harold’s cross (D6) are next at 42%, followed by Clontarf and Marino (D3) at 40%.

Crumlin and Drimnagh in Dublin 12 are next with 39% of dwellings rated ‘E’ or lower, followed by Rathgar and Terenure (D6W) with 35%.

The probe comes after a report this week by property company Savills and smart energy providers Pinergy revealed Irish households are using up to 30% more energy every day during the coronavirus pandemic.

Commenting on the analysis, Fianna Fail’s Housing spokesman Darragh O’Brien called for a state retrofitting agency to bring homes around the county up to standard.

He told Dublin Live: “Last year we saw a drop in the number of grants available for retrofitting and insulation.”

“This issue will be a priority for us if we go into government.

He added: “We are committed to setting up a state retrofitting agency and apprenticeship scheme.”
