Cabot Circus barbecue chain Coal Grill & Bar sold after restaurant's owner collapses

The company which owns Coal Grill & Bar in Bristol has fallen into administration.

Charterhouse Leisure is a licensed restaurants business which operated a number of the Coal Grill & Bar eateries, including the Cabot Circus branch.

The company has appointed administrators Stephen Paul Grant and Matthew John Waghorn of Wilkins Kennedy to oversee the administration.

As part of the restructure, Charterhouse Leisure has closed a number of its Coal Grill & Bar restaurants, including outlets in Swindon, Telford and Sheffield, and sold off others which continue trading.

The Bristol branch has been sold as part of the administration process and will continue to operate as usual.

Andy Vine, managing director of Coal, told Bristol Live’s sister site Business Live: "The Coal Grill and Bar restaurant group went through a company restructure in order to protect as many jobs as possible by continuing to trade in a challenging economic climate.

"Unfortunately there are some Coal Grill & Bar restaurants where we were unable to secure the trading terms which would allow us to continue operating.

"The restaurants in Basingstoke, Gloucester Quays, Bristol and Exeter have been purchased and the teams in those restaurants have continued trading without interruption.

"We look forward to the next chapter for Coal, our food philosophy has always been to enjoy fresh ingredients and big flavours – our menu evolution will develop seasonally with a focus on healthy eating and provenance."

The director of Charterhouse Leisure is named on Companies House as Sumit Chadha.

Chadha is also the owner of Organic Venturers, which trades under the name Severnshed in Bristol.

Organic Venturers has also fallen into administration; Severnshed has been sold and will also continue to trade as normal.

Andy added: "Severnshed has been purchased as part of a company restructure and has carried on trading without interruption.

“Ross Gibbens, Ben Porter and their whole team are still offering the same great food, drink and warm hospitality."
