Cable car could be running to the summit of Croagh Patrick if locals get their way in Co Mayo

A cable car could be running to the summit of Ireland’s Holy Mountain if locals get their way.

Some residents in the village of Lecanvey at the foot of Croagh Patrick in Co Mayo, think the project will boost tourism and help some climbers reach the peak. At last week’s meeting of the Westport/Belmullet Municipal District, the proposal was put forward.

Community representative Pat Joyce explained that despite being a national pilgrimage site, the 764m Croagh Patrick has lacked Government investment. He reckons the community’s proposed projects, including the cable car, would increase tourist figures in the region.

He told Midwest Radio: “I have a dream – some might say it is pie in the sky – that we will have a
cable car someday that will
leave Lecanvey and bring people to the summit. There are a lot
of people who are unable to
walk or have difficulty walking who would love to reach the summit.

“To some it would be ground-breaking, but it would be a huge advantage to the Lecanvey and Murrisk area.”
