Cabinet reshuffle: Dominic Raab demoted from Foreign Secretary to Justice brief

Dominic Raab has been sacked as Foreign Secretary in Boris Johnson’s cabinet reshuffle and replaced by Liz Truss who was Trade Secretary.

Raab, whose disastrous handling of the Afghanistan withdrawa l added to the humiliation and chaos of the Kabul evacuation, is the biggest sacking of the reshuffle so far.

But the Brexiteer is reported to have fought hard to stay in cabinet and was appointed Justice Secretary, replacing Robert Jenrick, and also managed to wrangle himself the title of Deputy Prime Minister as well as retaining the title of First Secretary of State.

The 'fire and re-hire' appointment for Raab as Deputy Prime Minister formalises a role he performed as first secretary of state when he stood in for Johnson while the Prime Minister was in hospital with coronavirus.

As Raab left Downing Street, where Johnson was appointing promoted Minister, Liz Truss made her way through the famous black door.

The Trade Secretary, who is popular with Tory activists and backbench MPs, was then promoted to be Foreign Secretary.

With Priti Patel remaining as Home Secretary two of the great offfices of state, Foreign Secretary and Home Secretary, are held by women for the first time.

Rishi Sunak was confirmed as chancellor as Boris Johnson's reshuffle unfolded making up the other two top post in cabinet.
