Cabinet nod to reshuffle of ministry top brass

Education permanent secretary Chaipreuk Serirak has been transferred by the cabinet to head up the Office of the Education Council.

The cabinet approved his transfer yesterday as it also rotated and promoted two senior Office of the Basic Education Commission (Obec) officials.

Under the order, Mr Chaipreuk becomes secretary-general of the Office of the Education Council, filling a seat left vacant after Kamol Rodklai was transferred to an inactive post at the Prime Minister's Office last month.

Obec secretary-general Karoon Sakulpradit, meanwhile, replaces Mr Chaipreuk.

The cabinet also approved the promotion of Boonrak Yodpetch, Mr Karoon's deputy, by appointing him as the new Obec secretary-general.

Education Minister Teerakiat Jareonsettasin said the shake-up at the Education Ministry was needed in the push for education reform and greater efficiency.

Mr Chaipreuk said he respected the decision by Mr Teerakiat and the cabinet and was ready to take up his new challenge.

"As a government official, I'm ready and willing to work anywhere I am assigned to," he said.

Mr Karoon said he was relishing his new role and thanked Mr Teerakiat and the cabinet for their trust in him.

Meanwhile, the cabinet yesterday also transferred National Office of Buddhism (NOB) director, Pongporn Pramsaneh, naming him as an inspector at the Prime Minister's Office.

However, the cabinet did not appoint a successor to Mr Pongporn.

Mr Pongporn was appointed NOB director in February this year to replace Phanom Sornsilp following the unsuccessful attempt by authorities to find and arrest Phra Dhammajayo, the former abbot of Wat Phra Dhammakaya who is wanted for alleged embezzlement.

Mr Pongporn proposed making it law for temples to declare their assets and financial records, as well as make them available for public scrutiny.

As a result of this it is speculated some senior monks engineered his removal from the post.
