Cabin crew explain how to secure a free upgrade to first class on flights this summer

Whilst the thought of the holiday itself keeps people going during the journey, plane travel is never the most comfortable. The hours pre-boarding the flight, the tedious journey itself... travelling by plane is often a clock watch activity.

However, cabin crew members have revealed to the Liverpool Echo some top tips for bagging a free upgrade to first class for your flight this summer. While there is never an absolute guarantee you'll secure an upgrade, a team of flight attendants explained to WhoWhatWear how to dress to be in with a chance of a complimentary first class seat.

The key is to avoid comfortable clothing. A flight attendant has explained that people can be denied entry to first class if they don't look the part.

A steward explained: "For an upgrade, it's all about looking the part. Smart but understated.

"You should look like you travel often. But don't be dripping in designer clothing.

"It helps. Someone who is potentially due to get an upgrade can be knocked back if they aren't dressed suitably."

Cabin crew staff in first class also have a dress code. There are two types of clothing that passengers should avoid if they want to be in with a chance of a first class seat.

The attendant said: "When we fly, we have a strict dress code to follow. No jeans or trainers - so I always go for tight black trousers and a blazer or a dress.

"For men, chinos or trousers and a shirt are worn." However, once passengers have received the upgrade, it's acceptable to then change into comfortable clothes for the duration of the flight.

A flight attendant said: "I always carry trackies on long-haul. It is acceptable for us to change on board."
