Cab Driver Reveals Why He Quit a 19-Year IT Career, Says He Now Earns More Than Before

That's exactly what happened when Zypp Electric founder Akash Gupta struck up a conversation with the cab driver taking him to his destination. What began as a casual chat about work soon turned into a story that has sparked widespread debate online.

From IT Professional to Cab Driver

During the ride, the driver revealed that he had spent 19 years working in the IT industry before deciding to leave the profession.

Curious about the change, Gupta asked how life had been since switching careers. The driver shared that he now earns between ₹80,000 and ₹90,000 a month driving a cab—significantly higher than the roughly ₹40,000 he said he earned during his IT career.

However, money wasn't the primary reason behind his decision.

When asked why he walked away from nearly two decades in the corporate world, the driver offered a simple explanation:

"Freedom nahi tha" (There was no freedom).

The remark wasn't delivered as a motivational quote or a carefully prepared statement. It was a straightforward response from someone who had already made peace with his decision.

Choosing Freedom Over a Conventional Career

The driver also mentioned that his wife now runs her own beauty parlour, suggesting that the family has embraced self-employment over traditional salaried jobs.

By the end of the journey, Gupta congratulated the driver and later shared a video of their conversation online. What seemed like an ordinary interaction quickly turned into a viral social media moment.

Social Media Divided Over the Career Switch

The clip attracted millions of views within a day, with users flooding the comments section to discuss work-life balance, financial priorities, and career satisfaction.

Many viewers said they could relate to the driver's perspective. They spoke about the pressures of corporate life, including tight deadlines, endless meetings, rigid schedules, and the need to seek approval even for personal leave. For them, the freedom to manage their own time appeared more valuable than holding a prestigious job title.

Others, however, urged people to look at the bigger picture.

Not Everyone Was Convinced

Several users pointed out that driving a cab comes with its own set of challenges. Fuel expenses, vehicle maintenance, insurance, taxes, and long hours behind the wheel can significantly reduce overall earnings. Many also highlighted the physical and mental strain of navigating traffic every day.

Some questioned whether the driver's reported monthly income reflected the average reality for cab drivers or if his case was an exception.

The discussion ultimately served as a reminder that every profession has its own trade-offs, whether one works behind a computer screen or behind the steering wheel.

Why the Story Resonated

The conversation resonated with millions because it wasn't just about an IT employee becoming a cab driver.

It touched on a question many professionals quietly ask themselves: Is job security enough if you're unhappy with the lifestyle that comes with it?

For this driver, the answer was clear.

While his decision may not appeal to everyone, it has reignited a broader conversation about what people value most in their careers—higher salaries, stability, or the freedom to live life on their own terms.
