CK Deepu cremated as Kerala's 'politics' claims another martyr

KOCHI: Hundreds, including a large number of women, gathered to pay their respects when the mortal remains of Dalit Twenty20 activist CK Deepu, who passed away on Friday a week after he was allegedly assaulted by four CPM workers, was brought to Twenty20 Nagar at Kizhakambalam.

The body was then taken to Deepu's house at Parappuram colony in Kavungalparambu, around 5km from Kizhakkambalam, in a large procession.

Meanwhile, Twenty20's chief coordinator Sabu Jacob said Deepu's death was a "pre-planned murder" and police should arrest CPM MLA P V Sreenijan as he was in contact with the accused.

Deepu was family’s sole breadwinner

Deepu’s parents, Chayattunjalil Kunharu and Karthu, were inconsolable as the body arrived. Deepu, a painting worker in an automobile workshop, was the sole breadwinner of the family. His father Kunharu is a heart patient and his mother Karthu is suffering from various age-related ailments. The cremation was conducted at the public crematorium at Athani near Kakkanad around 6:15 pm. Kunnathunadu police have invoked murder charges against the four CPM workers who allegedly assaulted Deepu. All four accused are currently in judicial custody.

“There is evidence of MLA’s comm unication with the accused prior to the attack and we have information that MLA and the accused hatched conspiracy to attack Deepu by meeting in atea shop. Police should include the name of MLA in the list of accused in the case,” Sabu Jacob said.
