C.J. Gardner-Johnson wearing walking boot after recent foot injury

New Orleans Saints defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson was held out of practice on Wednesday with what the team reported as a foot injury, and it doesn’t look like he’ll be available any time soon. The third-year veteran shared photos of his New Orleans Pelicans jersey (he’s a fan of All-Star forward Brandon Ingram) from the Saints locker room which also showed him wearing a bulky walking boot on his right foot.

Gardner-Johnson, 23, has become an important part of the secondary after winning the starting job in covering the slot last season. He also joined the exclusive 1,000 snaps club in 2020 for his efforts on defense and special teams and remains an important part of their frequently-used nickel personnel packages.

If he’s unable to play on Sunday, look for veteran backup P.J. Williams to step back into his role in the slot that Gardner-Johnson took last season. The Saints have also moved Bradley Roby into the slot and may take that route if they intend to keep rookie starter Bradley Roby outside.
