C.J. Edwards looks fine in his Cubs' spring debut

March 10--GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Cubs manager Joe Maddon is sending out the youth corps this afternoon at Goodyear Ballpark in search of his first win.

Jorge Soler, Javy Baez, Arismendy Alcantara, Kris Bryant and Addison Russell are part of the lineup facing the Indians, with Travis Wood on the mound.

On Monday, their top pitching prospect, C.J. Edwards, made his spring debut with a perfect inning against the Padres.

"I was still nervous," he said.

Edwards didn't look nervous, striking out two of the three hitters he faced.

"Yeah, I mean, they come, they go," he said. "It was my first outing, so I was just excited to be out there. It was normal, to the point where I was able to control my emotions and the adrenalin and all that."

Edwards, acquired from Texas along with Justin Grimm, Mike Olt and Neil Ramirez in the Matt Garza deal in 2013, has averaged 11.2 strikeouts per 9 innings in three minor league seasons, and is expected to start the season at Triple-A Iowa.Overall he's 14-7 in 5-0 games with a 1.86 earned-run average

He missed 3 1/2 months last year with a right shoulder strain, but said the shoulder feels fine.

Here's today's lineup:

La Stella DH

Lake LF

Alcantara CF

Soler RF

Baez 2B

Bryant 3B

Castillo C

Valaika 1B

Russell SS
