Byres Road incident: 'Stolen' car involved in crash after failing to stop for police

Police enquiries are underway to trace a car that was involved in a road crash after failing to stop for officers on a busy west end street.

The dramatic incident - involving a VW T-cross car - unfolded this afternoon around 1pm on Byres Road near Havelock Street.

A worker at exhibition space and coffee shop The Alchemy Experiment witnessed the event after being startled by a "big bang or smash" on the street outside, and reports seeing the car reverse into another vehicle before driving off as police tried to stop it.

They told Glasgow Live: "We heard a big bang or smash. A blue car drove into the back of a red car. We thought it was a situation involving gangs at first but we then saw that it involved police. We were told it was a stolen vehicle. The blue car reversed back suddenly and tried to drive away. Police tried to stop it but the car managed to do a U-turn and drive away."

They added that the occupants of the vehicle that was reversed into were "left shaken up" by the incident.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Police enquires are ongoing to trace a VW T-cross car that was involved in a road crash on Byres Road around 1.10pm on Tuesday, 2 February. The car had failed to stop for officers. There are no reports of any injuries.”
