Byker Wall residents describe how 'curtain of flames' engulfed flat during fire

Residents of Byker Wall have told how flames engulfed a flat after a blaze broke out on the estate.

The fire, at a top floor flat on Dalton Crescent, was described as an "inferno" and people reported seeing 6ft flames coming from the property on Tuesday morning.

Emergency services arrived in the area just before 9am after 19 calls were received about smoke coming from the site.

The Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service confirmed five appliances arrived at the scene to tackle the blaze and all people were accounted for. The cause of the blaze is unknown at this stage.

Callum Nash, 34, who lives on the third floor, was among the people who called the fire brigade.

He said he was woken up by burning debris falling down and saw 6ft flames coming from a flat above. He described it as an “inferno".

Callum, who works as a researcher at Northumbria University, added: "I was woken up by bits of burning debris falling. I first thought it was something to do with building work that has been going on here.

"Then I saw 6ft high flames licking out of the flat above. It was like a curtain of fire.

“I called the fire brigade and within 10 seconds they were pulling up outside. Other people must have also called them.

"They came straight through, went to the flat and the fire was isolated to that one flat. They contained it straightaway."

Another man said he saw "smoke billowing out from the flat like from a chimney".

"It could have been much worse if the fire crews had not arrived quickly and brought it under control," he added.

One mum told ChronicleLive she was shocked to see firefighters and police on the estate.

"I went to drop my son off at school and when I came back I thought ‘oh my God, what has happened here," the woman said.

"My neighbour told me there had been a fire and I wondered how bad it was. I just hoped no-one was hurt."

Byker Community Trust, responsible for managing homes and services on the estate, said there were no casualties and all residents were safe.

A spokesperson added: "We are assessing the extent of the damage and are working closely with the fire and rescue service to determine the cause of the fire.

"The fire was contained within the flat and there is water damage to other flats below and on the communal stairway. Our team are at the scene to provide support."

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service added: "We were called at 8.57am to a fire at Byker Wall in Newcastle.

"We dispatched one crew from our Hazardous Area Response Team and treated and discharged one patient."
