ISHINOMAKI, Miyagi -- An amazing sunrise was seen through a crack in boulder at Cape Kamiwarizaki, which is located on the border between Ishinomaki and Minamisanriku in Miyagi Prefecture, on Friday.
The name of Kamiwarizaki, which literally means "a cape divided by god" in Japanese, is said to have its origins based on legend. It's said that when two villages, which are currently Kitakami, a district in Ishinomaki, and the Tokura district of Minamisanriku, were fighting over territory during the Edo period (1603-1867), a huge boulder split in half after the earth shook. The villagers then decided to make the stone the boundary marker, calling it "a decision by god."
The crack is about three meters wide. According to Minamisanriku's tourist association, visitors can see this beautiful view every year for about one to two weeks in mid-February and late October. This month, it can be seen until about Thursday.
On Friday, about 20 people visited the cape. When the sun started to rise at 6:27 a.m., everyone took pictures at the same time.
"Seeing the amazing view, it made me think the early bird does get the worm," said a 29-year-old man who was visiting from Zao, Miyagi Prefecture.
