By-election date confirmed following the death of popular North Lanarkshire councillor

A by-election will be held in the Murdostoun ward of North Lanarkshire Council on June 24, after the death of Councillor Robert McKendrick.

One councillor will be elected for Electoral Ward 20.

Voting will take place between 7am and 10pm.

To be able to participate in this by-election, eligible residents must be registered to vote by midnight on Tuesday, June 8.

Applications for new postal or postal proxy votes and amendments to, or cancellation of, existing postal or proxy votes must be with the Electoral Registration Office by 5pm on Wednesday, June 9.

Applications for new proxy votes must be received by 5pm on Wednesday, June 16.

“To have a say in this by-election, you must make sure you are registered to vote,” said Returning Officer Des Murray.

“It only takes a few minutes now to register online – you just need your national insurance number and date of birth.”

Councillor McKendrick passed away earlier in April at the age of 71.

Speaking to Lanarkshire Live in the wake of his death, his son Robbie said: “He treated his constituents the same as he treated the family. To him they were a family.

“He was a brilliant dad and grandpa and we will all miss him.

“He loved being out and about, speaking to people and helping them.”

Robert was first elected to the council in 2007 as an Independent member, he served with distinction on a significant number of committees including education and families, housing, environmental services and the Wishaw and District Local Area Partnership.
