By-election called after long-standing councillor steps-down

A by-election has been planned  for October to fill the seat long held by Peter Johnston.

Mr Johnston stepped down as an SNP councillor  and party group leader in early April after serving  35 years -one of the longest serving local politicians in Scotland.

The former group-leader is still recovering from a serious illness which took him away from regular council business in 2018.

Tributes were paid to Mr Johnston at the last full meeting of the council in late March - a few weeks before the lockdown stopped all meetings.

The Returning Officer has determined that Thursday, October 1, 2020 is the date proposed for polling in the Local Government By-Election to be held in the Livingston South Ward.

The date has been fixed using powers in the coronavirus emergency legislation to hold the election later than usual. The date may be subject to change later.

The returning officer will keep the date under review and give notice of any change. Polling should take place between 7am and 10pm on Thursday, October 1, 2020.

Those intending to stand will have to notify the returning officer within the next few weeks.
